Blog Post 6: Timely Relevance and COVID-19

To close RSA’s blog post series on School Based Health Centers (SBHC), it is crucial to consider the role that SBHCs play during this time of COVID-19 – as the landscape of health and education is rapidly changing. For guidance during COVID-19, the New York School-Based Health Alliance offers a COVID-19 Resource Center, with specific information around School-Based Health Center Reopening Guidance.

As discussed in the previous post highlighting Genesee Valley School District, GVSD can now offer in-home telemedical services for GVCS students, faculty and staff. Mobile Primary Care (their healthcare partner) created a secure network that allows them to connect with families and students in their homes by a link that is sent to their email or cellphone. What can be diagnosed is limited, but it’s a continuation of medical services during this crisis. GVSD has also continued Telepsychiatry services as well, ensuring that there has not been a gap in coverage since COVID-19 began. While GVSD is simply one example, it is important to serve as a reminder that there are opportunities to continue partnerships – as innovations will certainly continue in upcoming months and years. Bassett School-Based Health Care Offers Services to Students During Pandemic, Reaches Out Via Video, as staff at their 20+ school-based health centers have created an uplifting video, collectively from their remote locations to remind families of the availability of these services at a time when school closures will result in increased unmet health and mental health needs.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about School Based Health Centers, as well as the options for continuity of services during COVID-19. It is our hope that you continue this journey towards expansion of services, and RSA looks forward to serving to support you in your efforts. While this is an unprecedented time, it offers a crucial moment to explore innovations at the intersection of health and education – and RSA’s network can be at the forefront of this work!
